Son of the celebrated Dutch marine painter Willem Van de Velde the younger (1633-1707), Cornelis was born in England after the family moved from Holland in 1672/3. He trained at Greenwich under his father and is thought to have shared a studio with fellow marine artist Isaac Sailmaker (1633-1721).
