This painting provides a mid-nineteenth century prospect of the ancient town of Brechin in Angus, North East Scotland. To the right, sitting above the South Esk River, is Brechin Castle. Considered one of the most historic properties in the Scotland, the building dates to the early eighteenth century when an earlier thirteenth century fortress was extensively reconstructed by architect Alexander Edward (1651-1708) for the 4th Earl of Panmure. In the centre sits Brechin Cathedral and its notable round tower dating to the eleventh century. This landscape was engraved (without huntsmen) by the artist in 1848.
