HH Function ’23 of the Hampshire Hunt won the coveted title of Champion Dog Hound at the 137th Peterborough Festival of Hunting in 2025. His dam is Judgment ’19 of the Hampshire Hunt and his sire is Forger ’19 of the Vale of White Horse Hunt,an influential stallion hound. Following his success, Function may follow in his sire’s footsteps and become a prominent stallion hound. Pedigree and lineage are of particular importance to those involved in the breeding and showing of hounds. Foxhounds are bred principally for their working qualities, with health, stamina and soundness central to the breeding process. Foxhound Kennel Studbooks and detailed records of hound lineages emerged in the 18th century, reflecting the increasing importance placed on breeding and pedigree.

Function’s distinguished pedigree and recent success exemplify the enduring importance of breeding, working ability and lineage within the tradition of the Foxhound.

Still’s work draws on the long tradition of commemorating the success of an animal in competition, through the commission of a portrait. Racehorses are the primary example of this practise, starting with works by artists in the early 18th century such as John Wootton and James Seymour, and continued today by artists such as Susan Crawford and John King. Here, Function is shown stood up alongside his rosettes and trophy which are so pronounced against the plain background. Still does not include landscapes in her works in order to concentrate attention on the subject alone, creating an impactful portrait.
