Seen here are two extraordinary racehorses – ‘Frankel’ (widely considered the world's greatest racehorse) and his brother, and often pacemaker, ‘Bullet Train’.

Crane has captured them at a moment of calm, walking together on the Warren Hill gallops in Suffolk. Frankel, on the nearside, is being worked by Shane Featherstonehaugh, whilst Bullet Train, behind, is ridden by Dani Danachi.

'Frankel' first attracted attention in 2010, winning the Royal Lodge Stakes by ten lengths before triumphing in the Dewhurst Stakes. As a three-year-old, he produced a remarkable performance in the 2000 Guineas, winning by six lengths. He went on to win several prestigious races, including the St James's Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. In 2012, 'Frankel' continued his unbeaten record by winning the Lockinge Stakes, Queen Anne Stakes, Sussex Stakes and International Stakes. He ended his career that year with victory in the Champion Stakes at Ascot and following this win his retirement from racing was announced.

'Bullet Train' holds a unique and selfless place in horse racing history. Like 'Frankel', he was trained by Sir Henry Cecil for owner Prince Khalid Abdullah and initially showed immense individual promise. His career highlight came as a three-year-old in 2010, when he won the Group 3 Lingfield Derby Trial, establishing his own credentials as a top-tier middle-distance contender. However, his individual ambitions were soon sacrificed for a greater team purpose. Recognising his steady stamina and reliable stride, his connections transitioned him into the role of official pacemaker for 'Frankel'. In historic Group 1 events like the International Stakes and the Queen Anne Stakes, Bullet Train routinely ran at the front. He ensured an honest, fast pace that prevented tactical trapping, perfectly setting the stage for 'Frankel'’s explosive late surges. Through his unwavering discipline, Bullet Train became an indispensable architect of his brother’s historic 14-0 undefeated streak, embodying the ultimate equine teammate. Like his brother, 'Bullet Train' also retired after the 2012 Champion Stakes at Ascot.

Although this work was completed the year following 'Frankel' and 'Bullet Train' had run their final races, several sketches and notes were taken by the artist of both horses, while they were still racing.
