This sculpture is of a horse that the artist met in Var - a department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. The region takes its name from the river Var, which flowed along its eastern boundary, until the boundary was moved in 1860.

Of the subject, Frippy Jameson recalls: “She was a particularly independent mare, extremely free spirited who had an exceptional link with her young owner, who said of Var : ‘Things were asked of her as opposed to told to her but when asked reasonably and respectfully she gave everything with care and consideration’.”
