The Frisian Water Dog is a distinctive breed, originating from the province of Friesland in the north of the Netherlands. The breed is believed to have developed in the 17^th century, meaning that this work is a rare, early depiction. Originally, Wetterhounen were entered to Otters and Polecats, as an attempt by fishermen to protect their stock. Later, Wetterhounen were used to flush and retrieve game birds and were also discovered to be excellent guard dogs, due to their build and temperament.
