The perspective of this work is low-set, so that the viewer is at ground-level with the dogs and surrounding flora. It is a composition which invokes sottobosco, a sub-genre which Begeyn also explored. The animals here are ‘Springing’ Spaniels, a breed which has now developed into the recognisable and popular Springer Spaniel. The appearance and purpose of the breed has barely been altered since the 17^th century, as the dogs are still used to flush or spring game out to guns. Springers today typically maintain the white and tan markings shown by the couple in Begeyn’s portrayal.
