Provenance

With Arthur Ackermanns Ltd, 27 Lowndes Street, London

With Collectors stamp on reverse

This painting depicts Mr Blakelock's racehorse, 'A British Yeoman', bred in 1840.

Extract from The Sporting Magazine with a description:

A British Yeoman: ‘A brown horse, standing sixteen hands high. Has a remarkably good head, a thick, muscular, and bloodlike neck and a firm crest.  He has a compact body, well ribbed up, with immensely powerful hind quarters, famous hocks, and good, broad, well-shaped feet. He stands a little over from age and work, but is still a most magnificent horse.  When stripped and brought out, as we saw him at Chelmsford, what with his beautiful coat, grand way of showing himself, and fine symmetry and power, he is about as attractive a specimen of the thorough-bred horse as it would be possible to find.’

After many good runs including various wins he was sold to Mr R.M. Jacques before going onto stud in 1844.
