This is a sketch in oil for Muncaster’s masterpiece, a large-scale panorama that he worked on for months. It was commissioned by Robert McAlpine in 1961 for his new Shell Building. Originally intended as a gift for his client, McAlpine judged it ‘fabulous’ and ended up keeping it.
