A self-taught artist, Axel Amuchastegui was born in Cordoba, Argentina in 1921. He speaks with lyricism of the beauty of the natural environment in which he grew up, raised by his grandmother and parents to have a love of all the creatures of the wild. He illustrated many works, including Birds of the World, Some Birds & Mammals of North America and Studies of Birds & Mammals of South America. He gradually developed a unique technique for his paintings using Chinese inks and watercolors. Jorge Mayol, the renowned painter was apprenticed to him and he is exhibited in many museums. Argentina has designed several postage stamps from his paintings. He is certainly one of the great ornithology illustrators of the 20th century.
