John Rattenbury Skeaping studied at Goldsmith's College, London and the Royal Academy. He won the 1924 British School of Rome prize and scholarship. Skeaping was a member of the London Group during the 1920s and was married to the sculptor Barbara Hepworth. He later worked in Mexico for a while before resettling in the Camargue. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1960 and is represented in a number of public collections, including the Tate.
