The Glorious First of June was a naval battle that took place on 1 June 1794, the first and largest action between Great Britain and the French First Republic in the French Revolutionary Wars. The painting depicts the British flagship, HMS Queen Charlotte, in a close-range artillery battle with the French flagship, Montagne, the former having succeeded in Admiral Howe’s unorthodox strategy of piercing the French line of battle in order to block its leeward escape route.
