Displays are changed on a regular basis, with an exciting programme of temporary exhibitions. The launch hang introduced some of Rountree Tryon’s most significant artists, including an important Peter Monamy, a vivid painting by Charles Pears and several typical, finely detailed works by Rodger McPhail, as well as a group of charming sketches of the Sussex countryside by Claude Muncaster.
The space occupies the bright, airy ground floor rooms of a listed historic building, formerly a tavern, in the market square of Petworth. Amidst the beautiful surroundings of the South Downs National Park, the bustling, picturesque town is well-known hub for art and antiques; it is also furnished with a range of boutiques and excellent restaurants and cafés. Nearby Petworth House, set in a stunning deer park designed by Capability Brown, is home to an unmissable art collection, including works by J. W. M. Turner, Joshua Reynolds and Titian, amongst others.
