Britain's position as supreme maritime power was established in the 18th century and survived largely unquestioned until the first World War. National Pride was inextricably bound up with the successes of the navy and the merchant fleets which placed the British Isles at the heart of a global trading empire. Here was an insprational subject for a new generation of artists who could draw on this new found national confidence to create a style of marine painting that was distinctly British.

This exhibition was intended to inspire a long overdue reappraisal of two artists at the forefront of these developments: Monamy and Brooking.
